Welcome to the Kingdom of Atenveldt!
The Kingdom of Atenveldt is part of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), a not-for-profit educational organization that studies western European history by recreating the "best" pastimes and crafts of the Middle Ages. The Atenveldt branch of the SCA encompasses all of Arizona and small parts of Utah and California.
The SCA has 19 Kingdoms (regional chapters) located around the world. The populace in those Kingdoms devote their free time to tournaments, festivals, educational collegiums (classes), feasts, revels, and all sorts of arts and sciences dating from pre-1600s western Europe. We try to bring the best of the Middles Ages back to life, by making an attempt at the proper clothing (we'll provide help with that), or learning calligraphy, fencing, dancing, or whatever Middle Ages activities you find interesting.
Most importantly, the SCA is not the same thing as a Renaissance Faire, because it is participatory. There is no audience. Every person plays a part in creating the atmosphere. We hold weekly meetings (sometimes called "fighter practices"), and "events" (get-togethers where costumes are required) nearly every weekend. Some feature armored combat tournaments and feasts, some are orchestrated around Middle Ages pomp and circumstance (audiences or "Courts" conducted by Royalty), while others focus on learning more about particular crafts.
Atenveldt is blessed with a year-round sunny clime, so our events often feature full weekends of activities at camping events, including bardic revelry around campfires! So, look for the group that is closest to you, or check out "How to find your local SCA group" to find a group near you. And welcome to the Best of the Middle Ages!
For more information about the history of the Kingdom of Atenveldt, see Duke Arthur of Lockehaven's "Atenveldt As I Remember It". For more information about the SCA in general, please visit the new FAQ on the SCA website.

| Southwind now available for electronic delivery - Monday, February 06, 2012Well folks we finally made it. The March Southwind will be the first issue to be available for electronic delivery. If you haven't done so already, I encourage you to "opt-out" of the paper version as it will save the Society money that can be directed to more productive things, from this point forward our corporate office has assumed all printing and mailing costs. To opt-out please go to www.sca.org and click on the "Opt Out Form" link. If you have questions about the the e-newsletters I encourage you to look at the following link as it will show you what the e-newsletter website will look like as well as have the answers to many of the questions that are being asked, http://www.sca.org/BOD/announcements/E-NewsFAQs.pdf. I feel the most exciting part is that those who receive an electronic newsletter will now have access to all of the Kingdom newsletters, making traveling to other Kingdoms' events easier. **I would like to remind everybody that the deadline for the Southwind remains the 1st of the month preceding the issue it needs to appear in. For example, the deadline for the March Southwind is February 1. There is no leeway in this deadline as my time to get the final copy to the Society Publishing Manager is a hard date.** Now, I would like to take a brief moment and thank everybody who helped me these last few months to reduce printing costs that we did have to pay to get to this historic point by folding, stapling, mailing, or the multitude of other tasks that were required in getting the Southwind out each month. Everyone of these people deserves my my most heartfelt gratitude. I couldn't have done it without them.

| The SCA 2010 Census is now LIVE! - Sunday, August 01, 2010The SCA is us — you and me doing what we do. But who are we, what do we do, and how can we support each other to make the SCA the type of organization we can be proud of?
The SCA 2010 Census committee has been asked by the Board of Directors to develop a census-level survey that will help us to address key issues facing the SCA. These issues affect our everyday experience in the SCA; from "pay for participation" issues and award structures to quantitative, qualitative, motivational, and behavioral demographics such as age, gender, activities and interest areas, and reasons for joining, remaining in, and leaving the SCA.
Because this is a "census-level" survey, we are attempting to reach each and every SCA participant, regardless of whether or not they are paid members or are currently active. Everyone's voice is important to the success of this project.
This information will help us, as an organization, move forward into the next decade, to identify, address and work on current issues and gain a better, deeper understanding into what makes the SCA what it is today. Your responses to these questions will also help us create a plan for making the SCA better organization in the future. The only way we can understand what is important is by hearing from you.
The survey is completely anonymous, you will never be asked for information that will identify you.
The SCA 2010 Census Survey is available here:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/SCA2010Census
The Survey will remain open until December 1st. Once the data collection is completed, the results of this survey will be made available on the SCA 2010 Census website. All data that is collected or published will remain completely anonymous and will not be sold or shared beyond this survey’s purpose.
If you would like to learn more about the SCA 2010 Census, if you have questions or ideas about the project, please contact the committee at scacensus2010@sca.org .
Please take the time to fill out the survey. The voices of each and every participant in the SCA whether you are currently active or not, will help us to better understand the SCA and enable us to grow and flourish as an organization.
Sincerely,
- The SCA 2010 Census Committee |
| Non-Member Surcharge Rates go up after July - Thursday, June 03, 2010At its January meeting, the Board voted to increase the non-member surcharge (NMS) from $3 US to $5 US, effective July 1, 2010. The complete text of the Board's announcement can be found at http://www.scatoday.net/node/15030.
"It must be noted first and foremost- the projected break-even budget for 2010 is based on one critical change; membership rates will be increase by $2, effective July 1, 2010. This will be matched with a $2 increase in the NMS. We in no way want to discourage new participants from "trying us out", however, the Board feels strongly that participating non members should also contribute to the organization." |

| Barony of Atenveldt Fighter Practice Must Move, Opinions Requested - Thursday, June 18, 2009Citizens of Atenveldt - Hear These Words
The use of Encanto Park for Barony of Atenveldt fighter practice is an item that must be negotiated three times a year with the City of Phoenix Parks central district parks office.
League requests take precedence over group use requests. Leagues have requested and been granted Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights for the fall term. The city representative is aware of our long history; however he is bound by policy. Therefore he processed our request for the next available night instead of merely returning our request as declined.
For this we thanked him.
The day granted for our use of Encanto for the fall term is Thursday night.
We must determine by the first week of August whether we wish to accept the Thursday night slot at Encanto, or decline and seek out another practice location to maintain our Wednesday night tradition.
Baron Otto, Baroness Lisabetta, and I are accepting written opinion on this matter. Please make clear whether you prefer to keep Wednesday night as the practice night and find another venue, or keep Encanto Park and practice on Thursday nights.
REMEMBER:
1) This will be renegotiated for the January 2010 to May 2010 period. If we want to return to Encanto then, we can submit a request to do so.
2) Written opinions are necessary in order to insure proper representation. E-mail to Their Excellencies at atenveldtcoronet@gmail.com or to me at seneschal@baronyofatenveldt.org. Please copy both if sending e-mail. Physical letters accepted by either party; we will
tabulate and confer.
3) Anyone is welcome to submit an opinion.
Best Regards,
Thegn Rhys ap Trahaearn
Seneschal, Barony of Atenveldt |

| Greetings unto the Chroniclers and Virtual Scribes of Atenveldt - Thursday, April 23, 2009For decades the Known World Handbook (KWH) has been a must-have resource for any newcomer to the SCA. The last update to this quintessential publication occurred over 14 years ago. Over the next year or so, the SCA will be revamping this critical handbook from the ground up. The goal is to release a new KWH for sale through the SCA’s online Stock Clerk by the first quarter of 2010.
We are looking for anything and everything a newcomer to the SCA could be interested in. If you have an idea for an article, send it on in. There is no limit to new and fresh ideas. For a list of sample topics visit: www.sca.org/kwh
Try to keep the articles between 800 and 3000 words, and please submit them via Word files or in the body copy of an email to kwh@sca.org. Authors of existing articles in the KWH are invited to refresh, renew, and update their prior KWH articles. If you send in any article, artwork†or photograph, please fill out the KWH release form available at: www.sca.org/docs/pdf/kwhrelease.pdf
